The first part of a two-part figure composition. The horizontal layout emphasises juxtaposition, rhythm and the tension between two bodies or characters. The characteristic blue creates distance and calm; the image appears less as a mere depiction than as the trace of a past scene. The composition invites slow contemplation, in which motif, material and atmosphere gradually become legible.
