Ralph D. Woop

Born in 1957, I see my work as a bridge between past, present and future. As a master of the Black Art of printing and a Schweizerdegen — a craftsman trained in both typesetting and printing — I preserve a historical craft that once revolutionised the spread of knowledge, words and images. Today, I continue this tradition in an artistic way: through cyanotypes, vintage prints and unique works on handmade deckle-edged paper. Fleeting moments are captured, refined and preserved for the future through a historical printing process.

My artistic inclination appeared early. During my school years at the Johannes-Kepler-Gymnasium in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt, my art teacher Paul »PeBe« Bader recognised my interest in creative image design. He inspired me to look more closely, to perceive forms more consciously and to deepen my understanding of visual art. From this early influence grew a passion that still accompanies me today: making moments, stories and traces of time visible.

My art is created where photography, digital technology, and historical printing processes meet. I work with contemporary motifs, but their final form is achieved through processes whose origins date far back. The Black Art represents a development that shapes our information society to this day: from set type, ink, and paper to digital images and global communication. This creates a connection between the spirit of the present and tradition. Each work bears traces of the moment, the material, and the artisanal process. It is not merely an image, but a preserved moment.

For me, cyanotype is more than a historical fine printing process. It is an artistic space in which light, paper, chemistry and motif interact with one another. My vintage prints are created on handmade deckle-edged paper. Each work is unique — chosen from the fleeting nature of our existence and transformed into something lasting. The images are linked to the past and at the same time express the present. In this way, artworks are created that span time: a bridge between past and present, made for the future.

My passion is to make the present moment visible while connecting it with the passage of time. I do not merely preserve historical printing techniques; I play with them, experiment, and open them to new forms of expression. Thus, the Black Art is given a new, artistic presence: not as a look back, but as a living connection of craft, history, and contemporary visual design.
